Network Upgrades

The following activities will occur on Sunday, November 22, 2009, during the regular scheduled maintenance period from 7 am to 10 am:

  1. All Fairfax campus core routers will have a maintenance restart. This will occur at approximately 7 am. All attempts will be made to restart all routers at the same time to minimize the total network downtime. This should cause only a 5-15 minute outage, but it may take longer. All connectivity between networks will be out during this period. Routing tables on some servers may need to be reset after this restart to clear any transient routes that may occur during the restart process. Phone service in the following buildings may be affected: Research I, the Engineering Building, the Arts Building, Recreation and Athletics Complex, CIT Building, and Loudoun may also be disrupted due to these resets.

  2. Science & Tech Core Upgrade: The Aggregation router in Science & Tech Core is undergoing an upgrade. This will cause a rolling outage to the buildings listed below. The outage for each building should be under 30 minutes total.

    • Carpentry Shop and Archive Building
    • Buchanan House
    • Carow Hall
    • Cooling & Heating Plant
    • Childhood Development Center
    • College Hall
    • Concert Hall
    • Enterprise Hall
    • Facilities Management
    • Fine Arts
    • Johnson Center
    • Maintenance
    • North East Sector Module 1 & 2
    • Patriot Center
    • Patriot Square
    • Performing Arts Building
    • Rivanna Module
    • Student Union 2
    • Warehouse

  3. Johnson Center Network Upgrade: Johnson Center will have a network upgrade. This will cause a rolling outage from floor to floor. This is separate maintenance than the above Science & Tech Core Upgrade. Each floor may be out for up to 15 minutes.

  4. Innovation Hall Network Upgrade: Innovation Hall will have a network upgrade. This will cause a rolling outage from floor to floor. This is separate maintenance than the above Science & Tech Core Upgrade. Each floor may be out for up to 15 minutes.

  5. Load Balancer Maintenance: The MESA Load Balancer will undergo maintenance, causing a short (up to 1 hour) outage.

  6. Wireless Maintenance: Maintenance will be completed on the Wireless Access Systems. This will cause a short outage for authentication of new connections for wireless users. This outage should be less than 30 minutes.

    7. Voice Mail Port Expansion

    The university-wide voice mail system will be unavailable on Saturday, December 5, 2009, from 4:30 to 5:30 am, while additional ports are added. All voice mail users and departments that use menu boxes will be affected by this outage.
